Information Theory: Data Compression, Channel Coding, Entropy, and Mutual Information
نویسنده
چکیده
This report gives an insight about two major aspects of information theory, including data compression and channel coding. It discusses the simulations results obtained using MATLAB from the information theory view point. It also defines these aspects by using the definitions of entropy and mutual information which reflects the optimum data compression could be obtained and the ultimate transmission rate for communication systems. Finally, it emphasises on the basic concepts of information theory, and how it’s a reflection of reality. Keywords— Entropy, Mutual Information, Data, Compression, Channel Coding.

متن کاملInformation theory
Information theory is concerned with two main tasks. The first task is called data compression (source coding). This is concerned with removing redundancy from data so it can be represented more compactly (either exactly, in a lossless way, or approximately, in a lossy way). The second task is error correction (channel coding), which means encoding data in such a way that it is robust to errors...

| General formulas for entropy, mutual information, and divergence are established. It is revealed that these quantities are actually determined by three decisive sequences of random variables; which are, respectively, the normalized source information density, the normalized channel information density, and the normalized log-likelihood ratio. In terms of the ultimate cumulative distribution f...
متن کاملUniversal noiseless coding
A&ruct-Universal coding is any asymptotically opt imum method of block-to-block memoryless source coding for sources with unknown parameters. This paper considers noiseless coding for such sources, primarily in terms of variable-length coding, with performance measured as a function of the coding redundancy relative to the per-letter conditional source entropy given the unknown parameter. It is...
